My family had a 1987 F-350 4x4 crew cab from new - long before the SUV and big pickup craze. There is something undeniably cool about piloting around 25' of hulking iron... though I suppose with today's fuel prices, that's hulking irony. We had good use for that truck, far beyond towing a 33' boat or loading all of our ski gear or camping gear up (though those were common for us to do). It was also a shop truck for a trucking company and garage, sometimes hauling complete engines as big as a Cummins KTA.

I agree that it's unfathomable to own a one-ton just as a playtoy as so many do.
