I am interested in buying a 70 foot boat for my own use to cruise the north-west. I have 30+ yeas of personal boating experience having owned sail and power as well as crewing for friends. I have saved more sinking boats and got more so called “sailors” underway than I care to mention. My background is in engineering and manufacturing. I have designed, built and services systems in electrical, electronic, pneumatic and hydraulic venues; sold world-wide. If it’s broken I can fix it. If it’s lost I can find it. If there is a mess I’ll clean it up and get on with it. I’ve traveled the world and know the name of the game in business, which is why I can afford to buy another boat.
My dilemma is that I want to add to my sea-going experience before I buy my next boat. I’ve also looked into various boat courses. The courses have a pre-requirement of commercial sea duty, which I lack. At this point in life I am not interested in becoming a deck hand on some rust bucket headed to the south-seas.
I am looking for ideas on how to increase my experience and credentials so that when I do buy my next boat I have what it takes to satisfy insurance compliance as well as possess greater competence in boat knowledge and skills.
