around 15 years ago (from 1986 to 1990) i worked as a sailor on containerships at Hapag Lloyd.

on "Frankfurt Express" (297m) we burned at 24knots around 200tons of fuel every day. but it was a twin screw vessel with 2 smaller engines, each with 9 cylinder and 35.000 HP

on "Hamburg Express" (297m) we have had a steam-turbine which also had burned around 180 tons of fuel every day at around 24knots on a single propeller.
but this ship was first build in the 1970's as a 2 screw (and 2 turbine) and has burned with this configuration around 400 tons a day with 29knots every day.
they changed this 2 turbine configuration in the beginning of the 1980's ... because the fuel was getting more expensive.
but it was great on that ship, because we had no vibration in the ship.... and on deck no sound.... it was like sailing with 24knots
on the other side, the bad thing was going through the red sea... the temperature in the engine room was at around 65° Celsius ... , not a nice place to work on.
